Who we are

Virtù House takes its name from the classical understanding of virtù: the cultivated capacity to act wisely, courageously, and effectively in a world shaped by contingency, chance, and constraint.

Liberty of conscience is a natural right of the soul.
— William Penn

We also draw inspiration from the early Anglo-American tradition of liberty of conscience, articulated most clearly by William Penn. Penn argued that freedom of conscience was not a privilege granted by the state, but a fundamental human capacity essential to moral responsibility, civic life, and human dignity.

This understanding of liberty remains central to our mission. Education should cultivate independent judgment, intellectual humility, historical understanding, and the capacity to engage thoughtfully with ideas, evidence, and fellow citizens.

Virtù House creates books, open educational resources, lectures, courses, digital media, and public scholarship designed to make rigorous learning more accessible while maintaining high academic standards and responsible inquiry.

We are committed to expanding access to knowledge, removing unnecessary barriers to learning, and fostering a culture of curiosity, civic reflection, and lifelong education.
